  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Date:  29-5-2015
Location:  Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: 15.6C
Depth: 9.2m
Visibility: 1m
Number of Sharks: 11
Conditions:  A windy day with periods of sunshine

This morning we launched early from Kleinbaai harbor as the wind was already rocking and it was going to pick up during the day. Fortunately the swell was not too big so we were able to go out. We gave everyone the opportunity to get dressed at the Great White house as it was more comfortable than to do it on the boat as there was a bit of chop. Fortunately we didn’t have to wait too long for sharks as the first one arrived after a mere 15 minutes. The first shark was a 3.5m shark which we were unable to sex as the visibility was limited to 1m. The surprise of the day was a juvenile shark at an estimated length of 1.6m! That is one of the smallest sharks we have seen so far and we believe it to be the same individual we saw a few weeks ago. Apart from this little shark we saw some big females as well including Vanessa, Ingrid and a third female at a length of 4.4m. A few days ago we saw Ingrid with the damaged dorsal. Sadly we believe it to be an injury sustained by a propeller from a boat engine. She is however still around and she is very active so hopefully the dorsal fin will heal up over time so that we may keep on enjoying her presence around the boat.
